Press release

Südkabel is proud to contribute to the 500 MW Greenlink interconnector between the UK and Ireland to increase renewable energy exchange capacity. Südkabel will supply approximately 63 km of 320 kV HVDC cable for the onshore route (approximately 24 km Ireland and 6 km UK), said Sebastian Ebert, vice president and global head of sales, marketing & execution at Südkabel.

Südkabel GmbH, Mannheim, will participate as a technology partner of the Japanese Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. in one of the largest HVDC transmission line projects in Europe and, in addition to land cable supply, will also provide services for installation, engineering and commissioning. The cooperation will benefit from Sumitomo Electric’s advanced HVDC XLPE material technology and HVDC submarine cable experience and Südkabel’s more than 20 years of experience in executing extra-high voltage XLPE cable systems worldwide.

Südkabel Managing Director Dr. Johannes Kaumanns stated, “We are very proud to support one of the most important European HVDC projects for the energy transition through our close cooperation as a technology partner with Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. to achieve the sustainable climate and environmental protection goals. This also includes our European competence in the manufacture of HVDC cables – Made in Germany.”

After many years of intensive qualification and testing, Südkabel is able to use Sumitomo Electric’s advanced HVDC XLPE material technology and participate in such a major infrastructure project with our EPC know-how for the turnkey delivery of extruded underground cables manufactured in the heart of Europe.
